New Norfolk is a stunning Derwent River town in Tasmania’s SE region 36 km n-w of Hobart. This National Trust-listed town was named for European settlers who arrived from Norfolk Island’s penal settlement (1807-08) and by 1860s, the area had a well established hop growing industry with a number of oast houses, where the hops were treated and pressed. Market held daily in Stephen St. Autumn in the Valley (Apr), Spring in the Valley (Oct). Mount Field NP (40 km n-w) Tasmania’s first national park covers 16 265 ha of glaciated landscapes, fern groves & rainforests and rugged mountain country. Highlights include walks to Russell Falls (20 min), Lady Barron Falls (1 ¾ hr circuit), Pandani Grove (30 min), Tarn Shelf (4-8 hours). Styx Tall Tree Reserve (73 km west) home of the world’s tallest hardwood trees, Giant Swamp Gums (up to 92 m).
